Update History:
- v1.46: Adding ~3700 events, translated from the French chronology Mini catalogue chronologique des observations OVNI by Belgian ufologist Godelieve Van Overmeire, 1935-2021. Note these events are from the old HTML version on archive.org, not the larger (10k event) PDF version. It is unclear if these events are copyrighted. I didn’t see a copyright in either the HTML or PDF versions.
- v1.43: Added ~3160 events, translated from a French chronology to English using OpenAI, from rr0.org. I believe this chronology was composed by Jérôme Beau. Its license is here.
- v1.40: Added digitized events/newspaper clippings from Frank Scully’s papers at the American Heritage Center in Laramie, WY, summarized the events from the timeline on the Disclosure Diaries website, and added more misc. events. Fixed auto-translation issue in the search page.
- v1.38: Added a client-side search engine. There are a bunch of features I’m going to add to this engine, for now it can only search for keywords in the desc, location and and reference fields.
- v1.37: Updated intro text, added total number of events to each event year, added a few 1800’s events.
- v1.36: Extracted and summarized the events in the book It Didn’t Start with Roswell by Philip L. Rife. Also extracted the military UFO events from Richard Dolan’s book UFOs and the National Security State: Chronology of a Cover-up, 1941–1973.
- v1.34: Added more modern events, 1917 Mystery Airplane newspaper articles.
- v1.33: More events: Events from George D. Fawcett, short AI summaries of Stringfield’s 1978 MUFON symposium presentation, and short AI summaries of the pre-industrial era sighting events from the book Wonders in the Sky: Unexplained Aerial Objects from Antiquity to Modern Times.
- v1.30: Added 203 Mystery Helicopter/mutilation related events (1970’s-1980’s) compiled by author/researcher Thomas R. Adams (1945-2015) (or see here), from his book The Choppers - and the Choppers, Mystery Helicopters and Animal Mutilations, minor fixes
- v1.28: Added KWIC (Key Word in Context) index.
- v1.27: Imported Anonymous PDF’s contents, originally from here, with fixed URL’s
- v1.23-1.24: Added a handful of key historical events, such as Edward Tauss the head of CIA UFO disinformation in the 50’s
- v1.22: Fixing the date of Dr. Eric W. Davis’s March, 2020 classified briefing to the Senate (I had it listed as March 2019) - info from NY Times. Basic locations added to Eberhart records using OpenAI.
- v1.20: Split up into 5 parts, to work around iPhone web browser limits. Minor spelling and grammer fixes throughout timeline.
- v1.15: Eberhart records now have basic locations, thanks to OpenAI’s Davinci-3 AI model. They aren’t perfect, but it’s a good start to geocoding them.
- v1.14: Added nuclear test data, over 2000 records, from the Worldwide Nuclear Explosions paper by Yang, North, Romney, and Richards. Note the locations in the paper are approximate, and the yields are not super accurate, which are two problems I’ll fix over time. I improved the coordinates of the earliest USA/USSR tests by looking them up from Wikipedia.
- v1.13: Split up the timeline into 4 parts. Still not the best solution, but it avoids croaking browsers.
- v1.12: Added *U* database record data, using a custom event description decoder to handle his 1k+ abbreviations and custom syntax
- v1.11: Crawled all ~10.5k unique URL’s in this timeline using curl and fixed dead URL’s to use archive.org.
- v1.10: Added NICAP DB data.
Important Notes:
Best viewed on a desktop/laptop, not a mobile device. On Windows, Firefox works best, followed by Edge, then Chrome.
I’ve split up the timeline into 4 parts, to reduce their sizes: distant past up to 1949, 1950-1959, 1960-1979, and 1980-present.
The majority of the events in this chronology are sighting related, however it’s important to be aware that this is a timeline of
UFO/UAP related events, not necessarily or exclusively UFO sightings. This is not exclusively a UFO sightings timeline or database.
Some sighting reports or events appear multiple times in this timeline because they appear in more than one data source. I view this as a useful feature.
Currently, the events are not sorted by time of day, only by date. Some sources have separate “time” fields, but most don’t. This will be fixed once the event times are automatically extracted from the description fields.
A few events don’t have firm dates, for example “Summer of 1947”, or “Late July 1952”. In these instances the compilation code uses fixed dates I selected for date sorting purposes. (See the code for the specific dates.)
Source Code:
This website is created automatically using a C++ command line tool called “ufojson”. It parses the raw text and Markdown source data to JSON format, which is then converted to a single large web page using pandoc. This tool’s source code and all of the raw source and JSON data is located here on github.

Date: Early 1970’s
Description: 2:30–3:00 a.m. Two young men in Furnace Creek, California, are followed by a red ball of light the size of a beach ball. They get scared and run ahead to their house, slamming and locking the door behind them. The ball stops at the edge of their yard, hovering and oscillating in size. After 4–5 minutes, the ball moves away and creates a vortex, causing stones to rise and circle in the air. They can hear the sound of the stones hitting together. Then the light blinks out, and the rocks crash down onto the road.

Event 32179 (04702506)
Date: 1970
Location: USA
Description: (Translated from French) At the same time (with the launch of the BMEWS alert satellites since Spring 1960) “IMEWS” (Integrated Early Warning System) were launched, equipped with two infrared cameras, one of which was equipped with a large diameter mirror, in order to discriminate between real rocket launches and simple reflections of the sun on clouds, which were the source of very numerous false alarms for the previous satellites. (…) The alert, if any, is transmitted to the nearest receiving station, in particular those of Guam or Australia. (…) These IMEWS are placed in geostationary orbit and not simply geosynchronous like those of the BMEWS. They are huge drums 3 m high and 3 m in diameter flanked by four solar panel panels giving them a wingspan of 7 meters. (From 1970 onwards)

Date: 1970
Location: USSR
Description: (Translated from French) The Americans call the listening satellites “ELINT” (Electronical Intelligence) and deny possessing them. In retaliation, the Soviets launched a very large number of them since 1970. The first of them was Cosmos 389, placed on an orbit between 600 and 650 km altitude approximately, inclined at 81°. Their launch frequency has gone up to 4 or 5 (per year) eight years later. (From 1970)

Event 32181 (7FE99780)
Date: 1970
Location: Germany, Black Forest
Description: (Translated from French) Linda Meyerson, aged 18, tearfully claimed to have been raped by an extraterrestrial who did it very well, since she gave birth to a monster. (vog: yet another unnatural gestation revealed by Jean FERGUSON… he does it on purpose!) Especially since the offspring she gave birth to has unknown physiological characteristics. Male, of human appearance, he can breathe safely in water or any liquid environment and can sniff a dozen deadly gases for ordinary humans. He has the gift of telekinesis, he can transmit his thoughts and read those of the people around him. So far, the father has not shown up to give a solid explanation about this “space cutting”. . .

Event 32189 (427D6CF6)
Date: 1970
Description: Author William Torbitt (a pseudonym for David Copeland, a lawyer in Waco, TX) claims several intelligence community sources give him information on a group running counterintelligence operations for advanced aerospace (and possibly UAP-related) projects: the Defense Industrial Security Command and a CIA front company located in Switzerland Permindex. Torbitt claims DISC’s offices are at 3990 East Broad Street, Columbus, OH and Redstone Arsenal.
He claims DISC includes the security division of NASA and includes awareness among a tight group of key personnel including J. Edgar Hoover, Wernher Von Braun, William Sullivan, Clay Shaw, and former FBI employee Guy Bannister. It is alleged Permindex is aware of advanced UAP projects and protects them with surveillance and intimidation, and possibly, assassination.

Event 32194 (E0DE4B15)
Date: 1/1/1970
Location: CANADA, Vancouver
Description: (Translated from French) (Source: From Our UFO Visitors, by John Magor) It was close to five o’clock in the morning when Miss Doreen Kendall, a nurse at the Cowichan District Hospital, noted that one of the strangers in her care was agitated. Deciding that he was too hot, she opened the window. As she drew back the curtains, she was met with a flash of light in her eyes. It was still dark outside, and about 20 m away, above the children’s pavilion to her left, there was a large luminous object, lighting up the area as if it were broad daylight. It was a circular object, the base was silver, but like a ball. All around it were lights in a necklace. The dome was transparent, made of glass and she could see inside. There were two figures, men, she thought. The one in front seemed taller, or was on a raised part. She looked on with immense curiosity but without any fear. Their heads were in something dark, tightly closed. She saw the craft rise, tilting, and she saw the figures from head to knees and they seemed to be facing chairs. They wore tight clothing of the same color as what they wore on their heads, but their hands were free and seemed human, with skin like that of the Earthlings. She saw a kind of panel, like a huge dashboard, going from the back of the object to the top, as if embedded in metal. This is how she forgot about Nurse Frieda Wilson, who was in the same room. She felt that she must not make any noise, nor call her colleague. The man in front slowly turned towards her, but his face was also covered, he touched the other man on the back, and the latter deliberately maneuvered a kind of lever and the saucer began to rotate slowly, still close to the building. Event 32199 (BB61939D)
Date: 1/1/1970
Location: Cowichan District Hospital in Duncan, British Columbia
Description: 5:00 a.m. Registered nurse Doreen Kendall is looking out a window at the Cowichan District Hospital in Duncan, British Columbia, and sees a bright, Saturn-shaped object about 50 feet in diameter hovering one story above her, about 60 feet off the ground and 40 feet away. It has a row of lights around its middle. She can see two humanoid figures in dark, tight-fitting clothing and wearing headgear in the upper portion. One stands at an instrument panel, with the other behind it. The second being looks directly at Kendall, then touches the first being, who moves a lever, apparently causing the craft to tilt down and provide a view of its interior. Kendall calls for other witnesses, who arrive in time to see the UFO leave.

Date: 1/7/1970
Location: FINLAND, Imjärvi (Heinola)
Description: (Translated from French) Aarno Heinonen, 36 years old, and Esko Viljo, 38 years old, were skiing in a forest 16 km north of Heinola. At 4:45 PM, as the sun was beginning to set, they decided to rest. A kind of buzzing sound was then heard and, looking up, Heinonen saw in the air a light of strong intensity that began a wide turn and came in their direction. It descended and stopped right in the space, surrounded by a kind of luminous grayish mist that manifested itself by pulsations, 15 m from the witnesses. Through the mist they saw an object of metallic appearance, the base of 3 m in diameter had three globes on a rim and in the middle a kind of large tube of about 25 cm in diameter. The mist gradually dissipated and when the object descended to 4 m from the ground the buzzing stopped. A beam of light came out of the central tube and a creature of about 90 cm appeared at ground level in this tube of light. Its face was pale like wax, on the head it wore a shiny conical helmet, and it was dressed in a light gray overalls that shone. The humanoid was wearing green boots. In his hand he held a black box from which a blinding flash suddenly emerged. The mist reformed around the object and the illuminated circle emitted green and red sparks. The fog thickened, the light trembled like the flame of a candle and returned to the tube. Then it was as if the mist scattered and everything had disappeared. Heinonen felt weak, paralyzed on the right side. It took them two hours to cover the 2 km that separated them from the village. He had headaches, vomiting, his blood pressure dropped, his balance affected. He was cold, despite the sedatives he had very sore neck, stomach and back for a while and could not return to work. Viljo had a red and swollen face and lost his sense of balance. He felt a kind of lightness in his legs and his chest and hands were covered with red spots. Other people went to the observation site and were sick for two days. (Inforespace n° 22, p. 2 and 3) Arno HEINONEN (36 years old) and Esko VILJO (38 years old): AH; heat and numbness in the side exposed to the UFO; respiratory difficulties; inability to work; EC: swellings, redness, loss of balance, headaches

Event 32205 (F55A1085)
Date: 1/7/1970
Description: (Translated from French) Finnish competitive cross-country skiers, lumberjack Aarno Heinonen and farmer Esko Viljo, find themselves in the forest near Imjãrvi (Finland). They decide to rest in a clearing and watch the stars rise as twilight falls. The two men hear a buzzing sound and see in the sky a very bright light approaching from the north. It turns around at the clearing level and descends towards them from the south. It is surrounded by a red-gray luminous mist. When the cloud has descended to about 15 m from the ground, they see in its center a disc of about 3 m in diameter. The disc stays at this height, continuing to buzz. Then, according to Heinonen: The immense disc began to descend with the red-gray mist, which became thinner and transparent. It stopped at a height of 3 or 4 m, so close that I could touch it with my ski stick. We saw that its upper part was topped with a dome. Along the lower edge was a kind of raised part with 3 spheres with domes spaced at equal distances. From the center of its lower part protruded a tube about 25 cm in diameter, from which suddenly came an intense beam of light. I suddenly felt as if someone had pulled me back. At the same second, I saw the creature. It stood in the middle of the light beam, with a black box in its hands. It was about 90 cm tall, with very thin arms and legs. Its face was like pale wax. The nose looked more like a hook than a nose. The ears were very small and narrowed at the face. The creature wore a kind of suit in a light green material and a shiny conical helmet like metal. The being points the black box at Heinonen, and a blinding, flickering yellow light takes him as a target. A red mist begins to cover the area and red, green and purple sparks begin to rain around the skiers like candles about 10 cm long floating in long curves. The mist becomes thicker and thicker, until, according to Viljo, the beam suddenly began to decrease, rose like a flickering flame and was sucked into the opening of the craft. Then it was as if the veil of mist had dissolved. The air around us was empty! After a few minutes, Heinonen realizes that he can no longer use his left leg, the one that was most exposed to the strange light beam. Viljo supports his friend to his home, about 3 km further. In the months that followed, Heinonen suffered from severe memory loss, constant pain, exhaustion and headaches. For 2 months, his urine was like black coffee. Viljo suffered from facial swelling, headaches and eye problems. (January 7th, 4:45 PM)

Description: 4:45 p.m. Two skiers, lumberjack Aarno Heinonen and farmer Esko Viljo, at Imjärvi, Finland, watch a disc- shaped, buzzing UFO approach them and hover. It is so close to Heinonen that he could touch it with his ski pole. From an opening in the center of the object’s bottom, a bright light beam is emitted, creating an illuminated area of 3 feet in diameter on the snow beneath it, edged with black. A red gray mist descends again; when it clears, both men can see, only 10 feet away, a 3-foot tall humanoid creature standing in the illuminated area, carrying in its hands a black box with a pulsating yellow light. Its arms and legs are very thin, its face pale like wax, and its nose hooked; it wears a light green coverall with darker green knee boots, white gauntlets, and a conical metallic helmet. Then the mist again descends, and long red, green, and purple sparks float out from the lighted area. A sort of flame rises from this spot and enters the UFO; then the mist and the UFO vanish. After this experience, Heinonen finds his right leg numb, and he vomits and passes black urine; Viljo also suffers severe physiological effects. Heinonen claims, two years later, a series of contacts with a female spacewoman.

Description: At 3:45 in the afternoon two cross-country skiers, Aarno Heinonen and Esko Viljo, heard a buzzing sound and saw a round, ten foot wide metallic object with a flat bottom and a dome in the sky outside of Imjarvi, Finland. It was wrapped by a reddish-gray mist. The UFO descended to within ten feet of the snow-covered ground in a forest clearing and the buzzing sound ceased. It was described as being so close to Heinonen that he could have touched it with his ski pole.
The two men next saw a beam of light come from an opening in the bottom of the craft. It created an illuminated area three feet in diameter on the snow beneath it, edged with black. A red gray mist descended again, and when it cleared both men could see, only 10 feet away, a three foot tall little man on the ground standing in the illuminated area. He had thin arms and legs, a pale waxy complexion with a hook nose, and wore a light green coverall uniform with darker green knee boots, white gauntlets, and a conical metallic helmet.
He held a small black box at his chest level with a pulsating yellow light from which a beam was emitted. Then the mist descended again, and long red, green and purple “sparks” floated out from the lighted area. A flame of sorts rose from this spot and the being entered the UFO. Then the mist vanished along with the UFO. After this experience, Heinonen found that his right leg was numb. He vomited and he passed urine that was black in color. Viljo also suffered severe physiological effects. Aarno Heinonen would go on to experience other close encounters, two years later, in a series of contacts with a fair skinned female being.

Location: New York City
Description: The UFO Subcommittee of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics sponsors a panel that meets in New York City to discuss differing viewpoints on UFOs. Among the panel members are Hynek, McDonald, Thornton Page, Gordon D. Thayer, and Philip Klass. The subcommittee, led by Joachim P. Kuettner, consists of scientists with no previous position on UFOs and reaches several middle-of-the-road conclusions. It criticizes the NAS position that the ETH is the least likely explanation and rejects McDonald’s position that it is the “least unsatisfactory.” It criticizes the Condon report, in which the conclusions do not match the data, and recommends a moderate-level, ongoing study of UFOs.

Event 32220 (5EEE77C5)
Date: 1/24/1970
Location: BELGIUM, Rhode St Genèse (not Uccle-Calevoet)
Description: (Translated from French) The witness, having parked his car, began his usual jogging session in this rural area. After a journey, he followed a field with wide furrows. Suddenly he saw a vertical wall of blue and fluorescent light as if placed on the furrows. The shape of this wall of light was regular, a few meters from the path. Despite his astonished fear, the witness approached this palisade of light which, suddenly, collapsed like a mass of light snakes, forming a single entity with interruptions whose ends were like cut off. This wriggling agglomerate stretched like a rope and flew undulating through the fields, progressing in waves, as if it followed the height and hollows of the furrows taken across. Then, without stopping, it disappeared towards a wooded area. The witness then discovered the traces of the phenomenon on the crest of the furrows. He returned the next evening to the scene without discovering or observing anything. (1970, January 24 (not 23))

Event 32221 (DDD098B3)
Date: 1/24/1970
Location: France
Description: (Translated from French) Saturday, early evening, around 7:30 PM. Mr. Herbosch was walking in the middle of Avenue de la Réserve when his gaze was drawn to something faintly luminous, about 20 meters in front of him, to his left, on the vacant lot, raised at this point by about 75 cm. It was then 7:45 PM. The witness stopped and saw that it was a kind of “stain on the ground”, oval in shape, several meters in size, 7 or 8 meters at first glance, which suddenly became very bright, like a phosphorescent light green color. (…) He was looking for the lamp or light source that should have produced such an effect. Indeed, it was logical, only a powerful projector could have been the source of this stain on the ground. But no beam of light or any device was visible. There was NOTHING. Suddenly, when he was barely 10 meters away from this stain, the witness stopped dead in his tracks, so much so that what he saw seized him, bewildered him and scared him. (What follows took place in 20 or 30 seconds maximum). The stain became brighter and brighter; it seemed to vibrate, then it swelled or inflated, a bit like a balloon, first laid flat on the ground, then suddenly inflated. The luminous bell thus formed grew even more, and the top reached a height of about 5 meters. It also looked a bit like the dome that could be seen on old steam locomotives. The coloration became almost blinding and the green color became paler, tending more towards neon white. This mass of light vibrated in a frightening way but still kept a clear bell shape and seemed to be made up of thousands of tiny luminous particles moving and swarming in all directions inside the bell. This gave the impression of terrible nervousness. When it reached its maximum height, this insolent apparition violently illuminated the whole landscape, as well as the curtain of trees at the end of the vacant lot. These trees, which are about 100 meters from Avenue de la Réserve, were illuminated in their entire height, as if by a flash of extraordinary power. Mr. Herbosch was also able to notice through the bell which was translucent despite the strong brightness, that the base was perfectly elliptical. The spectacle was quite frightening, all the more so since it took place in total silence. No heat effect or smell was noticed. At that moment, in the face of this quite unusual and unknown phenomenon to him, Mr. Herbosch was seized by extreme fear, but he stayed there, frozen, paralyzed in front of this strange scene. Immediately after illuminating the landscape, which lasted a few seconds, the bell suddenly collapsed or deflated to take its initial form of a stain, identical to what it was at the beginning of the observation. The brightness became weak again and again of a pale green color. Then the stain moved on the ground of the vacant lot and moved away from the witness (perhaps at 10 or 15 km/h) and disappeared towards the northwest, in the direction of a villa under construction at the time…

Event 32258 (B140530E)
Date: 2/18/1970
Location: USA, Glacier Park (Montana)
Description: (Translated from French) Leona Nielson was with two friends in her mountain cabin. They had had a pleasant evening and had gone to bed around one o’clock in the morning. But Leona couldn’t fall asleep. Her room faced the Flat River flowing down the hill. Suddenly the room was brightly lit by a light coming from below and she went out onto the balcony to see what it was. She then saw, in the field on the edge of the river, an enormous flying saucer about 20 meters in diameter with a platform 2 meters wide all around it. Two strange beings were busy on this platform as if they were making a repair, and probably using electric welding, as sparks could be seen. These beings were of normal size, bareheaded, wearing white overalls and seemed to walk and work like human beings. With her two friends who had joined her, Leona watched the repair which lasted for nearly an hour, then the sparks stopped. The two humanoids went back into their saucer, it immediately started off at a fantastic speed and disappeared into the clouds. (February 18, 1970)

Date: 3/1970
Location: CHINA, Weinanzheng, Gansu
Description: (Translated from French) One night at 3 or 4 o’clock in the morning, I went out to do a natural need. The weather was nice, the sky was all clear. On the porch, I instinctively looked up and saw, in the sky, to the northeast, something huge higher than the moon. This thing was luminous, 1.30m high and 1m wide, more than 2m long. The object looked exactly like a transparent door suspended in the firmament. Its luminosity seemed to me similar to that of a cinema screen. I was very surprised and stayed in the courtyard for about ten minutes without moving. (…) I went into the room to wake up my two other companions, but they were sleeping deeply and I didn’t succeed. As I was cold and scared, I didn’t dare go out again to see the strange phenomenon. The next day I fell ill and, for three days, I had a headache, I was always feeling like vomiting.

Event 32284 (7BB570D7)
Date: 3/26/1970
Location: SPAIN, Gabriel y Galand Dam
Description: (Translated from French) Nicolas Santos was driving when he could follow the maneuvers of an object of discoidal shape surrounded by portholes and surmounted by a dome. A reddish halo surrounded this thing that came to stop two hundred meters from the witness. Suddenly, under the object appeared several beams of bright light directed towards the ground. (…) “Suddenly the object started to move. It was something extraordinary. It gathered its light beams like a bird gathers its wings. The light folded in on itself gently and simultaneously the halo surrounded the craft again and it moved away.” Following the observation, the witness had to be treated for conjunctivitis. That night, for an undetermined cause, there was a power outage in the dam’s installations. (Jean-Marie DOUCHET - Nostra - 24.12.1980) It was, the witnesses said, something extraordinary, an enormous disc of about 15 m in diameter and 3 m high, flying horizontally, “majestically” and without noise. Very slowly, impressive to behold. The spectacle lasted 3 hours. It was evolving at an altitude of about 200 meters. A dozen powerful light beams illuminated the ground: a very particular light, very similar in intensity to fluorescent light, but of a slightly yellow-greenish color. On the side of the craft, portholes were faintly lit. Fairy spectacle more than frightening since one of the main witnesses, Mr. Santos Nicolas, a teacher in Guijo de Grenadilla, said: “I couldn’t believe it. It had been more than an hour that I could contemplate something wonderful, something so unusual that it really couldn’t belong to our world…” This long observation caused the witness’s vision to be altered, a burning sensation in the eyes. The ophthalmologist diagnosed conjunctivitis.

Event 32292 (A2C13E91)
Date: 3/28/1970
Locations: Cradle Hill; Warminster, Wiltshire, England
Description: 11:00 p.m. About 30 UFO spotters gathered on Cradle Hill, just outside Warminster, Wiltshire, England, see a flashing purple light. One of their sensors buzzes, indicating a strong magnetic field, and one observer (Norman Foxwell) takes photos that appear in the July/August 1970 Flying Saucer Review. But the UFO is actually a light beam from a high-intensity purple spot-lamp operated by a group of UFO debunkers, among them physicist David I. Simpson. Foxwell himself is part of the skeptical group (having pre-exposed a spurious UFO image), as is the individual who operated the bogus magnetic-field sensor. The hoax is revealed six years later.
