It is only at nightfall that they regain their senses and start playing again. Here again, as in the previous case, the witnesses did not want to talk about what they had seen, not even among themselves. The next day, they still could not understand their reactions to the apparition: I don’t know what’s happening to me, said one of the little girls. I can neither speak, nor play, nor sing, and I have no strength to do anything. (Summer)

Event 2759 (3351FAE5)
Date: 1917
Location: Belgium, in flight
Description: (Translated from French) (UFOWEB: The Red Baron is said to have shot down a UFO in 1917.) Bonn, Germany: The flamboyant fighter pilot known as the Red Baron not only shot down 80 enemy aircraft during World War I but he was also the first human to shoot down an extraterrestrial craft. This is what former German Air Force pilot Peter Waitzrik claims, who says he saw, to his surprise, the fighter pilot shoot at a UFO, which had orange undulating lights, above Belgium in 1917. Then, two of the occupants of the downed UFO, came out of their spacecraft and ran into the woods, apparently never to be seen again. “The Baron and I made a full report on the incident back to Headquarters and they told us never to mention this”.
The 105 year old former pilot recently spoke to a reporter. “And except to my wife and my grown children, I never said a word. But that was 80 years ago, so what difference would it make now?”. He recounts that he and Baron Manfred von Richtofen, nicknamed the Red Baron, were flying on a morning mission above western Belgium during the summer of 1917 when a UFO suddenly appeared in the blue sky, directly above their Fokker triplane. “We were terrified because we had never seen anything like this before, the United States had just entered the war, so we assumed it was something they had sent. The Baron immediately opened fire and the thing fell like a rock, shearing the treetops as it crashed into the woods. Then two little bald-headed guys came out and ran away” Waitzrik says he assumed the silver, glinting craft was some kind of enemy invention until the “flying saucer” panic began in the 1940s and convinced him his colleague had shot down a UFO. “This thing must have been about 40 meters in diameter and looked exactly like those flying saucer shaped spacecrafts everyone has seen during the last 50 years.” he says, “so there is no doubt in my mind that it was some kind of spacecraft from another planet, and those little guys running into the woods were not Americans but some kind of extraterrestrials” “You know, sometimes I wonder what happened to those guys”

Event 2790 (3F44392B)
Date: 8/19/1917
Description: (Translated from French) The children, released, keep their sheep near Aljustrel when they observe a sudden cooling of the temperature. The Sun becomes yellowish and the countryside is again filled with the colors of the rainbow, which the adults of the surroundings will also observe (as the inquiry will establish later). The children see the lightning and a bright glow that settles on a tree near them. In the center stands the entity draped in white and gold. The witnesses fall to their knees and their soul is transported with ecstasy. A dialogue ensues, during which the apparition exhorts them to make sacrifices for the fishermen. 10 minutes later, the Lady of Light slowly departs to the east with a roar of an engine. Event 2793 (1939AED7)
Date: 9/13/1917
Description: (Translated from French) The crowd is 30000 people, including two perfectly skeptical priests who have come specially to establish the falseness of the so-called “miracles”. The site of the apparitions is a vast amphitheater where most of the crowd has settled to be close to the tree of apparitions. However, the two priests have chosen a location in a higher place from where they can see everything. The Sun then becomes less intense although there are no clouds in the sky. Thousands of people: There she is… look! Everyone sees a globe of light descending slowly down the valley, from East to West, towards the children. It lands on the tree. A white cloud forms and bright white petals start to fall from the empty sky: As people stare at this strange spectacle, they soon notice that, contrary to the laws of perspective, these shining globules that fall become smaller and smaller as they approach them. And when they stretch out their hands and hats to grab them, they realize that, somehow, they have vanished. The children see the entity again at the center of the globe and the dialogue between the Lady and Lucia resumes. The promise of a miracle for October 13th is renewed. Then the luminous globe rises and disappears into the Sun. When one of the priests was asked what kind of globe it seemed to him, he, very impressed, said that it could be a celestial vehicle that was transporting the Mother of God from her throne to the desert down here. Event 2803 (BFF4E707)
Date: 10/13/1917
Description: (Translated from French) In front of a crowd of 70000 people despite heavy rain, the vision is preceded by a lightning and a sweet and pleasant smell. The children enter into communication with the Lady. Witnesses observe the great change occurring on the faces of the 3 children, transfigured by the vision. The announced miracle took place at the departure of the Lady of the Cova da Iria. The rain that had not stopped falling on the crowd suddenly stops, and the heavy clouds move away. The Sun appears as a shining silver disc, a fantastic disc that spins quickly on its axis and throws beams of colored light in all directions. Red rays shot from the edge of the Sun and colored the clouds, the earth, the trees, the people; then violet, blue, yellow and other colors followed. These colors were described by an objective skeptic as monochromatic sectors that spun endlessly. Reports speak of a flat disc rather than a globe. After a while, it stopped its rotation and plunged down in zigzag -like a dead leaf - towards the earth and the horrified spectators. Most of the observers then believe that their last hour has come. Many of them, including detractors, kneel in the mud and start to publicly confess. Finally, the disc reverses its movement and disappears towards the Sun, the real one, again fixed and dazzling in the sky. The stunned crowd suddenly realizes that their clothes are perfectly dry. Event 2805 (02944276)
Date: 10/13/1917
Location: Cova da Iria, Portugal
Description: After some newspapers report that the Virgin Mary has promised a miracle for the last of her apparitions, a huge crowd, possibly between 30,000 and 100,000, including reporters and photographers, gathers at Cova da Iria, Portugal. What happens then becomes known as the “Miracle of the Sun.” Various claims are made as to what really happened. The three children report seeing a panorama of visions during the event, including those of Jesus, Our Lady of Sorrows, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and Saint Joseph blessing the people. Father John de Marchi, an Italian Catholic priest and researcher who wrote several books on the subject, included descriptions by witnesses who believe they observed a miracle created by Mary, the mother of Jesus. After a period of rain, the dark clouds break and the Sun appears as an opaque, spinning disc in the sky. It appears significantly duller than normal and casts multicolored lights across the landscape, the people, and the surrounding clouds. The Sun then seems to careen towards the earth before zigzagging back to its normal position. Witnesses report that their previously wet clothes become “suddenly and completely dry, as well as the wet and muddy ground that had been previously soaked because of the rain that had been falling.” Not all witnesses report seeing the Sun “dance.” Some people only see the radiant colors, and others, including some believers, see nothing at all. The only known picture of the Sun taken during the event does not show anything unusual. No unusual solar phenomena are observed by scientists. Some theologians, scientists, and skeptics have offered alternative explanations that include psychological suggestibility of the witnesses, temporary retinal distortion caused by staring at the intense light of the Sun, a sundog, and optical effects caused by natural meteorological phenomena. The Miracle of the Sun is interpreted by others as a UFO event. Investigator Joe Nickell thinks that the effects are “a combination of factors, including optical effects and meteorological phenomena, such as the sun being seen through thin clouds, causing it to appear as a silver disc. Other possibilities include an alteration in the density of the passing clouds, causing the sun’s image to alternately brighten and dim and so seem to advance and recede, and dust or moisture droplets in the atmosphere refracting the sunlight and thus imparting a variety of colors.”

Event 2806 (F3A9AB4E)
Date: 10/13/1917
Description: Approximately 70,000 people crowded the fields surrounding the Cova da Iria, a grotto in Fatima, Portugal to witness a promised miracle. Miraculous events and apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary had been occurring monthly on the 13th of every month since three children–Lucia, Jesus and Marto-- had first met a mysterious lady in blue there in May. Not many of those in the crowd, even those close to the three children, were able to witness the apparition of the Lady on this day, but it is reported that everyone present saw “something.” The most common description was of a “gyrating sun” that became a silver disc, and emitted bright rainbow shafts of light, changing colors in succession from red to violet to blue to yellow. The flat silver disc plunged downward toward earth in a zigzag fashion. Catholics present interpreted these events as a sign from God, and the religious event was later sanctioned as a miracle by the Roman Catholic Church. The prophesies revealed that day have been kept secret by the Vatican, but reportedly involve the assassination of “the last Pope.”

Description: Charles Fort writes in his book “The Book of the Damned”: “I think we’re fished for. It may be that we’re highly esteemed Oby super-epicures somewhere… I think that we may be of some use after all. I think that dragnets have often come down and have been mistaken forwhirlwinds and waterspouts. Some accounts of seeming structure in whirlwinds and waterspouts are astonishing. And I have data that, in this book, I can’t take up at all - mysterious disappearances. I think we’re fished for… or our use to some other mode of seeming that has a legal right to us.” (See also: abduction phenomenom, Missing 411 series.)

Event 2830 (BD0FDA07)
Date: 1919
Location: Webster City, Iowa
Description: In 1919, a brother and sister on a farm near Webster City, Iowa, encountered unusual visitors. They saw a brown-green object near a tree and ran toward it, noticing a stern-looking figure in green-brown clothes standing by an open door. The figure made strange guttural sounds. A shorter figure appeared, quickly dipped water from the stream in a tin can, and was then hurried into the craft by the larger figure, after which the craft ascended rapidly, hitting tree branches. The craft moved sideways and over a hill with its three legs down, leaving without lights or sound. The children followed but soon lost sight of it. Round marks resembling cane imprints were left on the soil where it had landed. (Chapter 4, Ref 183)

Event 2834 (64B79DD6)
Date: 1/22/1919
Location: GREAT BRITAIN, Shuttlewood (Derbyshire)
Description: (Translated from French) At around 10:10 pm that night, Thomas Hills Harrison had just gone to rekindle the fire in his greenhouse when, heading towards the house, he saw through the living room window his father pointing out a light near the chicken coop, about fifty meters away from the witnesses. Harrison adds: "All the apple trees in the orchard were lit up and cast long shadows in all directions. The night was very dark, particularly quiet and even the chickens were silent when I opened the gate. As soon as I crossed it I could clearly see the luminous globe that remained stationary about 1.40 meters above the ground. At first I thought it was my neighbor Robinson, but not receiving any response to my call, I headed towards this fluorescent light, the size of a tennis ball, perfectly spherical and beautiful to look at, like a pearl out of proportion. I circled it several times, getting closer to less than 2 meters. For about ten minutes I kept staring at it. Finally I decided to pick up a stick that was lying on the ground to touch it and see what would happen. At that moment, as if he had understood what I was going to do, the globe started moving very slowly. I got even closer. The limits of the sphere were not clear, it was like a cottony aura. When it met the fence, the globe fell to the ground as if it were exploding. It quickly regained its normal size and began to climb the trellis in a truly impressive silence. The glow sank about ten meters into Robinson’s garden and then returned in my direction at a fast speed this time, suddenly turning to the right. I ran in its direction, I saw it climb the fence again, but I quickly realized that my pursuit was hopeless. When it reached a hawthorn bush, the globe leapt about ten meters high into a gap in the branches. The light stayed there for about three minutes, then disappeared from my view. Thinking that everything was over I went back to the house when I realized that the farmer Shepperd’s land was violently lit up. That’s when I saw the same glow making the return trip in my direction and at a fairly fast speed. When it was a few meters away from me I felt my hair stand on end for a short moment. The sphere went to the left and stopped in Robinson’s garden. I went to knock on Robinson’s door and the two of us saw the light globe go north-east, completely crossing the field over a distance of two hundred meters towards Bolsover Road. Then it made several circles around the tops of the roofs of a row of houses in Club Row, finally rising into the sky and disappearing eastward. It was then 10:50 pm. (January 22, 1919)

Location: Shuttlewood, Derbyshire, England
Description: After 10:00 p.m. A brilliant light the size of a tennis ball appears in a garden at Shuttlewood, Derbyshire, England. When the witness approaches it, it moves away at a leisurely pace and passes through wire netting. It follows the top of a hedge, turns right, and ascends until it finds a break in the high branches of a tree, where it hovers for 3 minutes before flying on. The witness then notices his neighbor’s farm is illuminated with bright white light. Several minutes later, the sphere returns to the garden, hovers another 3 minutes, then approaches the witness. As it does so, it turns from white to orange. It moves away, stops above a neighbor’s garden, travels along a hedge, traverses a field, and circles a row of houses before soaring into the sky and disappearing. The light is seen for 40 minutes.

Event 2846 (7EF2C27C)
Date: Late Summer 1919
Location: USA, Rice Lake, Wisconsin
Description: (Translated from French) One evening, young Harry Anderson (13 years old), his family and friends, went for a ride in his father’s new Ford Model T. Around 10 pm, returning towards Eau Claire, the engine made some dissonances. Father Anderson stopped on the south emergency lane of Highway 25. “There’s no more oil,” he said to his son, handing him a can in his hands, “go see if we can borrow some from a farm”. Swinging the can in one hand, Harry went off on the dark road. A road sign told him he was just outside of Barron, 5 miles west of Rice Lake. He saw the roof of a farm in the horizon and took a shortcut to get there. The farmer filled the can and Harry returned to the car. Suddenly he saw about twenty little men, coming towards him, walking in single file. They had bald heads and white skin, wearing short leather pants, held up by suspenders on their shoulders. Stunned, Harry hid behind a tree and from there observed the scene. He heard snippets of their conversations, sounding like childish rhymes:
"We won’t stop fighting Till the end of the war In Nineteen-Hundred and Ninety-Four. Sound off–one, two Sound off–three, four Detail, one, two, three, four One–two…three–four! The little column kept walking and disappeared into the woods. Harry remained petrified and his heart still pounding for several minutes. (1919, late Summer)

Description: Boni & Liveright publishes Charles Fort’s first book of scientific anomalies, The Book of the Damned. Fort gathers reports of objects or “vessels” that he humorously speculates might be visitors from a multitude of worlds that have come to earth over the centuries. Among his wilder expressions is the suggestion that floating land masses in the sky harbor civilizations and oceans. Fort also speculates that someone is fishing for us and that an alien race considers us its property, warning off all interlopers. It receives positive reviews from Ben Hecht and Booth Tarkington.
